Best Apps to Make Friends in India (2026 City Guide)

For most people in India, start with Meetup if you want a repeating in-person group, and use Bumble’s BFF mode if you want a one-to-one friend match. The separate Bumble BFF app is not available in India. Timeleft covers Wednesday dinners in four metros. FRND is for voice chat in Indian languages, not a cafe plan. Discord is for online communities.

Store listings, help pages, and city pages in this guide were checked on 24 October 2026. It’s a listing check. We did not create accounts or go to the events.
You search “Bumble BFF,” hit download, and the help page tells you the new app does not exist for your country. That’s the 2026 version of this problem. A lot of roundups still describe a friend app Americans can open and Indians cannot.
The new Bumble BFF app does not work in India. The friend tools that do are five different products pretending to be one category.

How did we choose these five apps?
Five rules, applied on 24 October 2026:
- The app had an official store listing, help page, or company city page we could open.
- A person in India could actually use it. A US-only download failed this test.
- The app had a clear job: a group event, a one-to-one match, a booked dinner, a voice room, or an interest server.
- Dating-only products stayed out. Bumble is here only because friend mode still lives inside it.
- We skipped apps we could not verify from a primary page that day. A blog calling itself the best friend app is not a listing.
Prices and city lists change. If a paywall on your phone disagrees with this page, trust the paywall.
| App | Purpose | How you connect | What you do | Price | Where it runs |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Meetup | Repeating groups | Join a group, then an event | Hobbies, talks, socials, a lot of tech | Free to join and RSVP. Meetup+ for DMs | iPhone and Android, worldwide, including India |
| Bumble BFF mode | One local friend | Separate friend profile, then a match | Chat, then you plan the meetup | Free download, paid extras in the app | Inside the Bumble app in India. Not the new BFF app |
| Timeleft | A table of strangers | Personality quiz, then a booking | Dinner, plus drinks or a women-only dinner in Mumbai | Subscription to book. Food paid at the restaurant | Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad |
| FRND | Talk in your language | Voice, video, rooms, games | Online chat, not a venue | Free download. Virtual gifts in the app | Android and iOS. Company address in Bengaluru |
| Discord | A community you already care about | Join a server, then talk | Games, fandoms, study groups, friend servers | Chat is free. Nitro is optional | Phone, desktop, and browser |
Which friend app fits how you want to meet?
Pick from the plan you can attend, not from the logo you recognize.
- Same hobby, more than once: Meetup
- One person nearby, and you are fine with profiles: Bumble BFF mode
- Dinner on Wednesday, in four cities only: Timeleft
- A call tonight, in your own language: FRND
- A game, college, or fandom you already have: Discord
Meetup, when you want the same faces again
Meetup is a calendar with strangers attached. You join a group, tap going on an event, and show up. Friendship is a side effect of seeing the same people at the third session, not the first.
Meetup’s India App Store listing is free to download, rated 13+, and carries in-app purchases. The Google Play listing says the same global story: over 60 million members, over 330,000 groups, and 100,000 events a week. Those numbers are Meetup’s, and they are not an India census.
On Meetup’s own member post, anyone can discover groups, RSVP, comment on events, and message organizers. Direct messages to random members are a Meetup+ feature. Public reviews on the stores complain that the free path is easy to miss. Both things can be true. Look for “continue with free” before you pay to attend something that was already free.
The India events page is a trap if you only scroll the top. On 24 October 2026, meetup.com/find/india was led by startup and tech sessions in Pune and Hyderabad: eChai, Grafana, AI talks, a Kafka meetup. The category list also includes games, dancing, music, and outdoors. Search the hobby, not the city homepage.
If you message an organizer, make it easy to answer:
“Hi, I am new to the group and I can come on Saturday. Is this okay for a first-timer, and is there a fee at the door?”
One event is a sample. The friend is the person who is also at the next one.
Bumble BFF mode, when you want one person
Bumble in India is still the dating app, with a friend switch hidden in settings. Bumble’s India App Store page lists it as free, with in-app purchases, and rates it 18+.
Here is the part roundups keep getting wrong. BFF’s availability page, updated 9 September 2026, says the standalone BFF app is only in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. If you are outside those countries, you cannot make an account on that app.
Bumble’s mode guide, updated the same day, tells everyone else to stay in the main app: profile, settings, type of connection, then BFF. Your friend profile is separate from your dating profile. You only see people in the mode you picked. Switching from Date to BFF removes the matches you already have. You can switch back later. Those matches do not come with you.
Use this when you want one person in your city and you already understand swiping. Do not use it when you want a book club with a time and a room. Bumble will not book the room for you.
This mode loses to Meetup if you hate one-to-one small talk. It loses to Timeleft if you want the restaurant chosen for you. It wins if a group of twelve strangers sounds worse than one conversation.
Timeleft, when you want the venue picked
Timeleft’s India page says the product runs in four cities: Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, and Hyderabad. Dinners are Wednesdays at 8:00 pm. Drinks are Thursdays in Mumbai. Women-only dinners are Fridays in Mumbai. The same page said 300+ people went to Timeleft events in India in September.
You take a personality quiz, book, and the app shows the venue and a little about the group before you go. City pages describe tables of four to six. Bangalore’s page says bookings close 13 hours before the event. Delhi’s page places dinners in South Delhi and Gurugram. Mumbai’s page uses SoBo and the Western suburbs. Hyderabad is Wednesday dinners too.
The app is free to download, then paid. Timeleft’s India FAQ says the subscription price depends on the plan, the app shows it before you pay, and food and drinks are extra at the restaurant. We are not printing a rupee price here, because their own page refuses to.
The US App Store listing rates Timeleft 16+ and shows in-app purchases. Timeleft’s developer page on the India App Store lists the same app. Google Play carries the Android build.
Timeleft is the right pick when you live in those four cities, you can do a Wednesday at 8, and you would rather pay than organize. It’s the wrong pick in Pune, Jaipur, Kochi, or anywhere else on the map. A dinner app with no dinner in your city is a loading screen.
If Bangalore is the city where your plans die in traffic, the local version of “everyone is busy” is in how to make friends in Bangalore when everyone is busy.

FRND, when the friend you need tonight is a voice
FRND is the app in this list that is actually built for India, and it’s also the one least likely to get you a table on Saturday.
The Google Play listing, updated 22 October 2026, calls it a live voice and video chat app. It names 12 Indian languages: Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Punjabi, Odia, Bengali, Marathi, Malayalam, Gujarati, Bhojpuri, Rajasthani, and Haryanvi. You can use an avatar, join rooms, play games, and send virtual gifts. The listing says the app is for making friends online. Play rates it Teen. The developer block is Interact Group Private Limited, with an address in HSR Layout, Bengaluru.
FRND’s own site, in a section dated August 2026, says 3 million monthly users, 30+ minutes a day, and 10 Indian languages. The store listing we opened in October says 12 languages. We are using the store list, and flagging the mismatch so you do not trust a screenshot of the homepage from memory.
FRND is a phone call, not a plan. That can be exactly what you want after a shift, in a town with no hobby group, in the language you actually think in. It’s a bad tool if your goal is “someone to get chai with in Koramangala on Sunday.” Recent public reviews on the Play listing also complain about sudden bans and about losing people after a good call. We did not reproduce those bugs. Read the latest reviews before you invest a week.
Discord, when you already share a thing
Discord’s own guide describes it as voice, video, and text around communities, mostly small servers, plus bigger public ones tied to games and hobbies. It runs on your phone, your laptop, and a browser. Discord’s age article, updated 22 September 2026, says you must be at least 13, and in some countries 16.
You do not need Nitro to talk. Nitro is the paid layer. The Nitro page lists a Basic plan at $2.99 a month in US dollars, and the charge in India can look different at checkout.
Discord wins when your people are already in a server: a game, a college batch, a fandom, a study group that meets in voice every night. It loses when you need a human in your pin code this weekend. A global Minecraft server will not introduce you to the person two lanes over.
What if your city is not one of the four dinner cities?
Then stop shopping for a dinner subscription. Timeleft has told you, in plain text, that it’s four cities.
Meetup can still work. Pune’s startup events were on the public India page the day we looked. A board-game group or a weekend trek in your city might be there too, under a category, not on the homepage. If the only groups are pitch nights and you do not want a pitch night, that’s useful information. The app is alive. Your hobby is not on it yet.
FRND and Discord do not care that your city is missing from a dinner list. They also will not walk you to a park. If the friend you want is specifically a court partner, that’s a smaller job than “best friend app,” and it’s covered in finding a badminton partner in India.
If the gap is a plan that already has a time, and you are tired of profiles, AskOut is the one built for joining hangouts with people who are actually free. It’s a worse pick than Timeleft when you want a restaurant chosen for you in those four cities, worse than Meetup when you want the same hobby club every month, and worse than FRND when you want to talk in Tamil tonight and stay home.
After the first event or the first good call, the app has finished its job. What you do in the doorway is closer to meeting new people without dating apps. Leave with one concrete next thing, or leave with nothing. “We should hang out” is nothing.
“I am free Sunday after 5 near Indiranagar. Want to get chai, or are you going to the next Meetup?”
Send that while you are still in the cab. Waiting three days turns a nice stranger back into a profile.

What will this cost you beyond the download?
The download price is the small number. The night out is the real one.
On the India App Store listing, Meetup Plus shows up at ₹499 and ₹999, a 1-month member subscription at ₹299, and other rows up to ₹2,999. The public list does not explain every billing period. Read the screen that is about to charge you. Joining and tapping going is still free. Meetup+ is for DMing other members.
Meetup’s organizer price page lists Standard plans starting from $29.99 a month, $99.99 for six months, or $174.99 a year, and says the number changes by location. You only pay that if you host. Attending is a different product.
A Meetup RSVP can still have a ticket the organizer set. Timeleft’s dinner is the menu plus the auto, on top of the subscription the app shows before you pay. FRND gifts and Discord Nitro are optional. You can talk without them.
Put the event in your calendar before you message anyone. An app you open in bed and never attend costs more than chai.
FAQ: making friends on apps in India
What if I live in Pune, Jaipur, Kochi, or a smaller city?
Timeleft’s India page lists only Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, and Hyderabad. Meetup still had public events in Pune and Hyderabad on 24 October 2026, mostly startup and tech, so search your hobby instead of trusting the homepage. FRND and Discord do not need your city to have a dinner. A small local Meetup group is still more useful than a huge app with nobody near you.
Which of these apps can a 17-year-old use?
Bumble’s India App Store listing is rated 18+, so BFF mode is not for you yet. Meetup’s India App Store listing is 13+. Discord’s help center says you must be at least 13, and in some countries 16. FRND’s Google Play listing is rated Teen. Timeleft is 16+ on the US App Store. Read the rating on the store you download from, because the stores do not always match.
Is there a women-only way to make friends on these apps in India?
On Timeleft’s India page, women-only dinners are listed on Fridays in Mumbai, not in Delhi, Bangalore, or Hyderabad. The other apps in this guide did not show a separate women-only product when we checked. If a mixed dinner or a swipe feels wrong, skip it. A hobby group with a public guest list is easier to judge before you go.
Is Meetup’s 60 million members an India number?
No. That figure is on Meetup’s global store listing, next to over 330,000 groups and 100,000 events a week. It does not say how many of those people are in India. Use it as a sign the app is big, not as proof your neighborhood has a good group.
Can I start my own Meetup group if nothing exists for my hobby?
Yes, but hosting on Meetup is a paid organizer plan, not a free button. Meetup’s help page lists Standard organizer prices starting from $29.99 a month, and says your local price can differ. The India App Store also shows a Standard Organizer purchase at ₹999, without a clear period on the public list. If you only want to attend, you do not need that plan.
Will people at a Timeleft dinner speak English?
Timeleft says you pick the languages you speak when you book, and they try to seat you at a table in one of them. That can be the local language or English. It is not a promise that every table in Bangalore is an English-only dinner. If language is the whole point and you want it tonight, FRND’s listing is the one that names Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and nine more.
Open one app that matches a plan you can physically attend this week. RSVP or book before you build a profile essay. Then stop opening a sixth app until you have actually gone.
